Decoding Culture
In this course you discover all the aspects of carrying out a critical, applied cultural research project - from defining context, grappling with ethics and constraints, different methods for decoding culture through to synthesizing what you’ve learned into a compelling narrative and strategic outputs. Throughout, you’ll find exercises and templates to dig into, as well as anecdotes and case studies from real projects to inspire and clarify. The cultural sphere is more fragmented, complex and critical than ever. We can no longer think about culture in terms of institutions or national borders. Everything we communicate, invest in, design or build is shaped by context, and will make impacts in culture. Navigating this complexity is critical. If we want to build future-readiness in a changing world we need to be able to understand the dominant power structures perpetuated in culture, in order to challenge them or work with their momentum. Decoding Culture makes us more curious and sensitive practitioners. It requires us to break-up with our own point of view. It's about observing and paying deeper attention to the world around us. Looking at emergent edges and the ‘outsider’ perspective is where we find potential for new ways. The course is for anyone who is curious about integrating cultural understanding into their work - either by commissioning experts or building personal or internal capability. At a broad level, the content is for anyone interested in navigating complexity in our world with critical curiosity.
You will leave with:

We are finding ways to make School of Critical Design a more inclusive and representative forum as we address the critical challenges facing our planet, people, and organisations.
We understand that income and means and time is unequal across personal, regional, and global contexts. To accommodate these differences we've created this virtual self completed course that is more accessible than our in-person and live virtual workshops.
While top university design masters programs like the Royal College of Art (Where we also teach) will cost students tens of thousands of pounds a year, We hope this version of the our teaching material and experience can allow participation and world class development without financial anxiety.
With this said, if there are particular situations where this pricing is still difficult, please reach out and we'll look to work with your individual context.
